Obidos and Fatima

After a quick breakfast this morning, we hopped in the car and drove to Obidos. Óbidos is another very ancient medieval town in Portugal that has a medieval wall and a castle. It was originally inhabited by the Celts, taken over by the Romans. The Romans built an aqueduct and built the wall. The Moors then took over until Portugal finally fought back and regained Christianity in the region. This is pretty much the same story for all of Portugal.

We were blessed to spend Easter Sunday in Fatima. Fatima had the miracles of the sightings of Mary from three Shepherd children in 1917. A chapel was built in the field, where the shepherds saw Mary the Virgin mother in a splash of the dancing sun for several days in a row. After the chapel was built a very large cathedral was built in an entire square dedicated to this miracle. It is very similar to the Vatican Square. Pilgrims come from all over the world to see this special Catholic site. We did witness a few pilgrims crawling in on her knees to get to the chapel. Easter masses were going on pretty much every hour on the hour at both the cathedral and the chapel. It was quite a beautiful place to be on Easter.

We did tackle the rain, more cold, and more wind. When we got back to Nazare, the sun actually came out and it felt a little warmer. We plan to go for an early dinner tonight. Once we check out of our hotel in the morning, we plan to visit Peniche, another surfing town, then Sintra before we settle in Lisbon for the night
